In 2016 DBS’s director, David Clarke, hiked the Everest Base Camp Trail in Nepal to raise money for Cancer Research. After 6 months of training David flew to Kathmandu and then on to Lukla in a light aircraft where he began his ascent to Everest Base Camp. The trek started at 2,840m/ 9,317ft and finished at an incredible 5,545m/ 18,188ft, with David raising £3,400 for charity. Whilst on the trail, David learned of a Sherpa guide who sadly died in an avalanche while setting out ropes on a mountain trail for climbers, leaving behind a wife and four children. The eldest of the guide’s daughters, Psang Lamu Sherpa, was just about to start nursing college when her father died and her dreams of a medical career looked shattered. David was extremely moved by the family’s story, and when he returned from Nepal he spoke to the DBS team about it, who all agreed with him that DBS will now fund the entirety of Psang Lamu Sherpa’s college education to ensure she has a bright future.
